What Died, What Evolved, What Was Born

When we set out to build competency frameworks for the Orchestration Era, we didn't start from scratch. We started with the traditional dimensions that engineering organizations have used for decades, and asked a simple question about each one: what happens to this when code falls below the abstraction line?

The answers fell into three categories. Some competencies dissolved entirely. Some were elevated from secondary concerns to primary differentiators. And some are entirely new — capabilities that didn't exist in traditional frameworks because the work they describe didn't exist before AI.

What Dissolved

Let's start with the uncomfortable part. Several competencies that have been central to engineering career ladders for decades are losing their standalone significance.

Code Quality & Craftsmanship

For twenty years, “writes clean, well-structured code” has been near the top of every engineering rubric. In the Orchestration Era, AI generates the code. The engineer's job is to specify what “clean” means and validate that the output meets that bar, not to produce the code themselves.

This doesn't mean code quality stops mattering. It means the skill shifts fromproducing quality code to recognizingit. That's a fundamentally different competency, and it got absorbed into our Validation & Quality Judgment dimension.

Language & Framework Expertise

“Deep expertise in Python/Java/Go” was once a legitimate differentiator. When AI can generate idiomatic code in any language, the value of memorized syntax and framework-specific patterns drops sharply. What remains valuable is understanding the concepts underneath: type systems, concurrency models, memory management. Those still inform whether AI-generated code is correct.

Debugging & Troubleshooting (as traditionally defined)

Traditional debugging meant reading stack traces, setting breakpoints, and tracing code paths. In the Orchestration Era, the engineer often hasn't written the code they're debugging. The skill transforms from “I can trace through code I wrote” to “I can evaluate whether AI-generated code is doing what the specification requires.” That's validation, not debugging.

What Was Elevated

These competencies existed in traditional frameworks but were often treated as secondary, nice-to-have skills that didn't make or break promotions. In the Orchestration Era, they become primary.

Business Acumen & Domain Knowledge

In traditional frameworks, “understands the business” was usually a senior-level nice-to-have. When AI handles implementation, understanding what to build and whybecomes the primary differentiator at every level. A P3 engineer who deeply understands the business domain will consistently out-specify a P5 who doesn't.

Communication & Specification

Every engineer has always needed to communicate. But when your primary output shifts from code to specifications that AI will implement, the precision of your communication becomes your primary technical skill. Ambiguous specifications produce wrong code. Clear specifications produce right code. This is no longer a soft skill — it's the skill.

Systems Thinking & Architecture

AI can implement a feature. It struggles to understand how that feature interacts with the rest of the system, what the second-order effects are, and whether the approach scales. Systems thinking was always important for senior engineers. Now it's important for everyone, because someone needs to be the connective tissue between AI-generated components.

What Was Born

These dimensions have no equivalent in traditional frameworks. They describe capabilities that simply didn't exist before AI entered the engineering workflow.

AI Orchestration & Toolchain Mastery

How effectively can an engineer leverage AI tools, chain AI operations, select the right model for a task, and manage the end-to-end pipeline from intent to production? This is an entirely new technical discipline, and it's evolving faster than any previous engineering skill.

Validation & Quality Judgment

Traditional code review assumed the reviewer and the author were both human, with similar mental models. Reviewing AI-generated code is fundamentally different. The code may be syntactically perfect but semantically wrong. It may pass all tests but violate an unstated business rule. The validation skill set (knowing what to check, how deep to look, and when to trust versus override) is new.

Specification Craft

Writing a prompt is easy. Writing a specification that consistently produces correct, secure, well-architected code across complex domains? That's a discipline. It requires understanding AI capabilities, structuring requirements for machine consumption, and building feedback loops that improve output quality over time.

The Implication for Career Ladders

If your engineering career ladder still has “Code Quality” as a top-level dimension, it's measuring the past. If it doesn't have “Specification Craft” or “Validation Judgment,” it's not measuring the present.

This isn't academic. Engineers are being promoted (or not) based on these frameworks. Organizations that update their ladders will develop the right skills. Organizations that don't will optimize for a world that no longer exists.
